Description logics, as a formal foundation for ontologies, exemplify this approach by defining classes through descriptions that specify necessary and sufficient conditions. Documents, entities, or resources can thus be located and related based on descriptive criteria rather than exact matches.

Description-based access control is another common application. Access decisions may be driven by descriptions of subjects and resources, such as roles, attributes, or contextual properties, enabling more flexible and fine-grained control than rigid role-based schemes. In information retrieval and data integration, description-based indexing and matching use metadata and content descriptions to improve search relevance and interoperability.

Advantages of description-based methods include greater expressiveness, adaptability to changing requirements, and improved alignment with human intuition through descriptive attributes. Challenges can include the need for comprehensive and consistent descriptions, potential ambiguity in natural language, and increased computational complexity for reasoning and matching.
