Dermatologen

Dermatologen are medical doctors who specialize in dermatology, the medical field dedicated to the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes. They diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, from acute infections and inflammatory diseases to skin cancer and cosmetic concerns. They also manage systemic diseases that have skin manifestations and provide preventive skin care and patient education.

Education and training: After earning a medical degree, individuals complete a residency in dermatology, typically lasting several years and followed by board certification or national licensure depending on the country. Some pursue fellowships in subspecialties such as pediatric dermatology, dermatopathology, dermatologic oncology (Mohs surgery), cosmetic dermatology, or lasers and light-based therapies.

Clinical practice: Dermatologen perform skin examinations, dermoscopy, skin biopsies, cryotherapy, and minor surgical procedures such as excisions. They prescribe topical and systemic medications for inflammatory diseases, infections, and skin cancers, and may use phototherapy, laser treatment, and chemical peels for therapeutic or cosmetic purposes. They coordinate care with other physicians as needed.

Settings and scope: They work in hospitals, academic medical centers, private clinics, or multi-specialty practices. Subspecialties include pediatric dermatology, dermatopathology, Mohs micrographic surgery, cosmetic dermatology, and laser therapy.
