Derbi

Derbi is a term used to describe a local or regional sports rivalry, most often a football match between two teams from the same city or region. In Spanish-speaking media, derbi (often written without diacritics) denotes such competitions, with examples including the Madrid derby between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid and the Seville derby between Sevilla FC and Real Betis. The word derives from the English derby, originally linked to the Derby horse race and the town of Derby; the precise origin is debated. Derbies can occur in various sports, but football derbies are the most widely recognized.

Famous derbies beyond Spain include the Milan derby (Derby della Madonnina) between AC Milan and Inter, and the Old Firm in Glasgow (Celtic vs Rangers). Derbi usage is common across Europe and Latin America and often signals intense, traditional fixtures with high stakes for clubs and supporters.

Derbi is also the name of a Spanish motorcycle manufacturer founded in Mollet del Vallès, Catalonia, in the 20th century. The company became known for small-displacement motorcycles and mopeds and was acquired by the Piaggio Group in 2001, after which production continued under the Derbi name in some markets.
