Depozícia

Depozícia is a Slovak noun that denotes the act of depositing or something that has been deposited. It can refer to the action of placing goods or substances in a location or entrusted to another’s custody, as well as the resulting object or sum. The term derives from Latin depositio, with later borrowing into many European languages, including Slovak.

In geology and sedimentology, depozícia refers to the process by which solid material is laid down in a new location by air, water, ice, or gravity. This accumulation forms sedimentary layers, which may later harden into rock (lithification). The characteristics of a deposit depend on energy conditions, material supply, and chemistry.

In finance and law, depozícia commonly means money or property placed with another party for safekeeping or as security. A bank deposit is funds entrusted to a financial institution, sometimes generating interest. A security deposit is money provided to cover potential damages or losses. In civil or contract law, depozícia can also denote the act of leaving valuables with a custodian or a deposit of documents.

In archaeology and anthropology, depozícia describes the deposition of artifacts at a site, whether intentional or incidental, which helps researchers interpret past activities and environments. The concept also appears in everyday language to denote any act of leaving or placing something in a designated place for safekeeping.
