Dentinschichten

Dentinschichten refers to the layers or strata of dentin, the calcified tissue that forms the bulk of a tooth, lying beneath the enamel and surrounding the pulp. Dentinogenesis, the process of dentin formation, results in distinct layers that reflect the chronological deposition of dentin matrix.

The primary dentin is the first dentin to form and is located between the developing pulp and the future amelodentinal junction. It is characterized by the presence of odontoblasts, the cells responsible for dentin formation, and their processes extending into the dentinal tubules. Secondary dentin is formed after the tooth has erupted and is characterized by slower deposition and a more irregular arrangement of tubules. It forms on the inner wall of the dentinal tubule system, progressively reducing the size of the pulp chamber over time. Tertiary dentin, also known as reparative or reactive dentin, is formed in response to stimuli such as caries or attrition. It is laid down only in the affected area and is highly variable in structure, often containing fewer tubules or irregular tubules.

The presence and characteristics of these dentin layers are crucial for tooth integrity and response to stimuli. Understanding dentin layers is fundamental in restorative dentistry, endodontics, and dental histology.
