Dentigerende

Dentigerende refers to the process of tooth formation in vertebrates, including humans. It begins during the embryonic stage and continues throughout life in some species. The process involves the differentiation of ectodermal cells into odontogenic cells, which then form the dental lamina. This lamina gives rise to the dental papilla and enamel organ, which are crucial for tooth development.

In humans, dentigerence typically occurs during the prenatal period. The dental lamina forms in the oral ectoderm, and the dental papilla and enamel organ develop from the mesenchyme. The enamel organ produces the enamel, while the dental papilla forms the dentin and pulp. The process is regulated by a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors.

Dentigerence is a continuous process in some species, such as sharks, which shed and replace their teeth throughout their lives. In humans, however, dentigerence is largely completed by the time of birth, although the process of tooth eruption and root formation continues postnatally.

Abnormalities in dentigerence can lead to various dental conditions, including hypodontia (missing teeth), oligodontia (fewer than normal teeth), and supernumerary teeth. These conditions can be caused by genetic mutations, environmental factors, or a combination of both.
