Denatruoti

Denatruoti is a Lithuanian term (verb) meaning to denature. In general use it describes the process of altering a substance so that it becomes unfit for its original purpose, most commonly to prevent human consumption while preserving other properties for industrial or technical use. The concept spans disciplines such as chemistry, biochemistry, and materials science.

The most familiar example is the denaturation of ethanol, known in everyday language as denatured alcohol. Denaturation involves adding denaturants—substances that impart taste, odor, toxicity, or irritation—to ethanol, making it undrinkable. Common denaturants include methanol, isopropanol, acetone, and bittering agents.
