Demosaikointimenetelmä refers to the process of reconstructing a full-color image from the raw data captured by an image sensor that uses a color filter array (CFA). Most digital cameras employ a CFA, such as the Bayer filter, where each pixel records only one color (red, green, or blue). Demosaicing algorithms are essential to interpolate the missing color information for each pixel, thereby creating a complete RGB image.

Various demosaicing techniques exist, each with different trade-offs in terms of computational complexity, image quality, and artifacts. Simple methods, like bilinear interpolation, are fast but can lead to color aliasing and blurriness. More sophisticated algorithms, such as variable color ratio interpolation or gradient-based methods, aim to preserve finer details and reduce artifacts by analyzing the spatial relationships between pixels and their color information. Edge-directed interpolation and machine learning-based approaches represent more advanced strategies that can yield superior results but often require more processing power. The choice of demosaicing algorithm can significantly impact the perceived quality of the final image, especially in areas with high detail or strong color transitions.
