Demodulációval is the process of extracting the original information-bearing signal from a modulated carrier wave. Modulation is the process of encoding information onto a carrier signal, typically a radio frequency wave. This is done to transmit the information over a distance. Demodulation is the reverse process, where the original information is recovered from the modulated signal.

There are several types of modulation, including amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), and phase modulation (PM). Each type requires a corresponding demodulation technique. For example, AM signals are demodulated using an envelope detector, which essentially follows the variations in the amplitude of the carrier wave. FM signals are demodulated using a frequency discriminator or a phase-locked loop (PLL), which detect changes in the frequency of the carrier wave. PM signals are demodulated using a phase detector, which measures the phase difference between the received signal and a reference signal.

The demodulation process is crucial for receiving and interpreting transmitted information. Without effective demodulation, the modulated signal would be unintelligible. The design of demodulators is a key aspect of radio receiver design and is influenced by factors such as the type of modulation used, the desired signal quality, and the complexity of the implementation. Various electronic circuits and digital signal processing techniques are employed to perform demodulation, with the goal of accurately reconstructing the original information with minimal distortion and noise.
