Delta8THC

Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol, or delta-8-THC, is a cannabinoid found in cannabis and hemp, and an isomer of the more well-known delta-9-THC. It differs from delta-9-THC by the position of a double bond in the cyclohexene ring. Delta-8-THC is psychoactive and interacts with the endocannabinoid system, with affinity for CB1 receptors in the central nervous system.

Natural occurrence and production: delta-8-THC is typically present in cannabis in small amounts. In many products, it is manufactured from cannabidiol (CBD) derived from hemp via chemical conversion, or extracted directly from cannabis. This conversion can produce varying levels of potency and may introduce residual solvents or other impurities. Because of this, product quality and labeling vary, and some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit delta-8-THC.

Effects and pharmacology: delta-8-THC has psychoactive effects similar to delta-9-THC but is often reported as milder or with a different subjective profile. Onset and duration depend on route of administration: inhalation leads to effects within minutes and can last 2–6 hours, while oral consumption has a slower onset and variable duration. It acts as a partial agonist at CB1 receptors, producing changes in mood, perception, and cognition.

Legal status and safety: the legal status is complex and jurisdiction-specific; federal rules in the United States have been interpreted variably, and many states have banned delta-8-THC or impose labeling requirements. The FDA has not approved delta-8-THC for medical use and warns about safety concerns, including product mislabeling and potential contaminants. Clinical data on efficacy and safety are limited, and consumers should exercise caution.
