Dekodning

Dekodning refers to the process of transforming encoded information back into a usable form. In Swedish, Danish and Norwegian usage the term covers several domains, but it shares the core idea of reversing an encoding step to retrieve the original data, message or meaning. The specific methods depend on the encoding scheme and the context.

In digital communication and information processing, decoding is the reverse operation of encoding performed by a decoder. A received signal is often corrupted by noise, so decoding may include error correction. Common approaches include hard-decision decoding, soft-decision decoding, and sophisticated algorithms such as the Viterbi algorithm, BCJR, or belief propagation. Codes like Hamming, Reed-Solomon, LDPC and Turbo codes are designed to improve reliability. Performance is usually characterized by bit error rate or frame error rate, while decoding complexity and latency matter for real-time systems.

In linguistics and media studies, decoding describes how audiences interpret encoded messages. It involves cultural codes, context and the potential for multiple readings. The concept is associated with the idea that producers encode messages with certain meanings, which audiences may decode in dominant, negotiated or oppositional ways, depending on social position and prior knowledge.

In other technical fields, decoding may refer to multimedia formats, data compression, and cryptographic processes where encoded data is recovered. Successful dekodning requires knowledge of the encoding method, correct timing and synchronization, and, when applicable, error detection and correction mechanisms.
