Decimalprecision, commonly referred to as decimal precision, is the practice of specifying the number of digits to the right of the decimal point in a number, indicating the level of precision or the intended accuracy of a measurement or calculation. It is separate from the broader notion of significant figures, but in practice both convey the reliability of a numerical value.

In computing, decimal precision is tied to how numbers are stored and manipulated. Floating-point formats (such as single-precision and double-precision) store approximate values; a double typically provides about 15 to 17 decimal digits of precision, while a float provides about 7. This limited precision can cause rounding errors, cancellation, and accumulation error in arithmetic operations. Decimal-based formats, such as IEEE 754 decimal128, store digits in base-10 and can guarantee exact decimal representation up to the defined precision, which is important for financial calculations.

In measurement and data reporting, the number of digits after the decimal point conveys the measurement's precision. For example, reporting 3.50 m implies precision to the nearest hundredth of a meter, assuming the measurement device supports that accuracy. When combining values, precision should be managed to avoid implying false certainty.

Programming languages provide formatting controls to specify the number of decimal places when displaying results, and several rounding modes exist, such as round half up and round-to-even. When exact decimal arithmetic is required, libraries or decimal types are used to avoid binary floating-point errors.

Common pitfalls include assuming that more decimals always mean more accuracy, and ignoring propagation of error in calculations. Understanding decimal precision helps ensure appropriate representation, rounding, and error management in numerical work.
