Deatsetüülatsiooni refers to a chemical reaction where an acetyl group (CH3CO-) is removed from a molecule. This process is often the reverse of acetylation, which involves the addition of an acetyl group. Deacetylation is a crucial biochemical process that occurs in living organisms and plays a significant role in regulating the activity of various biomolecules, particularly proteins.

In biological systems, deacetylation is most commonly associated with histone proteins. Histones are involved in packaging DNA into nucleosomes, and their acetylation status significantly influences gene expression. Acetylation of histones generally leads to a more relaxed chromatin structure, promoting gene transcription. Conversely, deacetylation of histones compacts the chromatin, repressing gene expression. This dynamic regulation of acetylation and deacetylation is a key mechanism in epigenetics.

Enzymes called deacetylases, specifically histone deacetylases (HDACs), catalyze this deacetylation reaction. HDACs remove acetyl groups from lysine residues on histone tails. The activity of HDACs is tightly regulated and imbalances in their function have been implicated in various diseases, including cancer and neurological disorders. Therefore, HDAC inhibitors are an active area of research for therapeutic interventions. Beyond histones, deacetylation can also occur on other proteins, affecting their stability, localization, and interaction with other molecules.
