Deassociating

Deassociating refers to the psychological process of detaching oneself from distressing thoughts, feelings, memories, or sensory experiences. It can manifest as a feeling of being outside of oneself, observing life as if watching a movie, or a sense of unreality about the surrounding environment or one's own body. This experience can range from mild and transient to more severe and persistent.

This phenomenon is often a defense mechanism employed by the mind to cope with overwhelming stress, trauma, or intense emotional pain. By creating a psychological distance, individuals may feel a temporary reduction in their distress. While it can be a protective response, chronic or severe deassociation can interfere with daily functioning and well-being.

In some instances, individuals may intentionally induce altered states of consciousness through meditation or other practices, which can sometimes involve mild dissociative experiences.
