Dateret

Dateret is a Danish word that functions as both the past participle of the verb datere and as an adjective meaning “dated” or “having a date.” The verb datere means to assign a date to something, and in casual use it can also mean to date someone romantically.

Grammatical use: As a participle, dateret is used with an auxiliary such as har to form perfect tenses, for example “dokumentet er dateret 1999” (the document is dated 1999) or “han har dateret fotografierne” (he has dated the photographs). The simple past of datere is daterede, as in “de daterede hinanden i to år,” and the present tense is daterer, as in “de daterer sig.” The adjective form can appear as “en dateret artikel” or “et dateret fotografi,” describing items whose dates are known.

Dating sense: In informal Danish, datere can also mean to be in a romantic relationship. In this sense, “de daterer hinanden” means they are dating, and “de daterede hinanden” means they dated each other in the past.

Usage notes: In metadata, archives, and catalogs, dateret is commonly used to indicate the date of creation, publication, or provenance. It is distinct from opdateret, which means updated, and more specifically marks a revision date rather than the original dating of the item. The term thus serves both a temporal and a relational function depending on context.
