Datenspuren

Datenspuren, or data traces, are the digital traces left by users, devices, and systems as they interact with digital services. They can reveal information about identity, behavior, and location, and may persist beyond the immediate session.

They arise from multiple sources, including web logs and cookies, app telemetry, device sensors, and location services, as well as metadata such as timestamps, identifiers, and network data. Even when data is anonymized, combinations of traces can enable re-identification or profiling.

Common categories of datenspuren include technical metadata (timestamps, IP addresses), behavioral data (navigation paths, app usage), content data (messages, posts), and location data. In practice, these traces are collected by service providers, advertisers, security systems, and sometimes by third parties, sometimes across different platforms.

Datenspuren enable a range of uses such as analytics, personalization, fraud prevention, and security monitoring. They also pose privacy risks: improper sharing, data breaches, and the potential for surveillance or discrimination when traces are aggregated and analyzed.

Protection and mitigation involve privacy by design, data minimization, and clear user consent, as well as controls to view, export, or delete data. Individual measures include privacy settings, browser protections, encryption, and the use of privacy-preserving tools. On a larger scale, legal frameworks aim to limit data collection and retention and to grant rights to access, rectify, and erase data.
