Dampforsterkning

Dampforsterkning is a term used in building science to describe a set of measures aimed at reinforcing a structure against moisture-related damage. The word combines damp, meaning moisture, with forsterkning, meaning reinforcement, and it is most commonly found in Norwegian-language technical literature and practitioner guides on moisture control in buildings.

The concept centers on reducing moisture intrusion, controlling moisture transport through walls and roofs, and strengthening materials and assemblies to withstand damp conditions. Core principles include proper drainage, appropriate use of vapor barriers and moisture-retardant layers, air sealing to limit humid air ingress, and the selective use of damp-resistant materials. In some cases, active moisture control such as dehumidification or conditioned environments is incorporated.

In practice, dampforsterkning covers both preventive design for new constructions and retrofit strategies for existing buildings. It is particularly relevant in basements, bathrooms, kitchens, and other spaces with elevated humidity, as well as in climate zones with high rainfall or humidity.
