The game typically involves two teams, one representing the "devils" and the other the "saints." The devils, often dressed in simple or humorous costumes, attempt to catch members of the opposing team while they run through a designated area. The saints, usually children or young people, run in a zigzag or circular pattern to avoid capture. The devils may use various tactics, such as chasing, blocking paths, or even attempting to tag players. If a devil successfully catches a saint, the saint is temporarily "captured" and must perform a silly or embarrassing task, such as reciting a poem or singing a song, before being released.

Dammlöpning is often played in open fields, forests, or village squares, and it reflects the playful, sometimes mischievous spirit of Swedish holiday customs.
