Daikokuten

Daikokuten is one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology. He is the god of wealth, commerce, and prosperity. Often depicted with a black cap, a scowl, and holding a large sack of treasures, Daikokuten is also known for his role in agriculture, particularly as the protector of rice crops. He is frequently shown standing on two rice bales, symbolizing abundance and good harvest.

The origins of Daikokuten can be traced to the Hindu deity Mahakala, a manifestation of Shiva. When Buddhism spread to Japan, Mahakala was syncretized and transformed into Daikokuten. He is also associated with the Shinto deity Okuninushi, a god of the land and agriculture, further solidifying his connection to fertility and prosperity. This dual nature, blending Buddhist and Shinto elements, is a common characteristic of many Japanese deities.

Daikokuten is a popular figure in Japanese folk religion and art. His image is commonly found in shops, businesses, and homes, especially during the New Year period, as people pray for good fortune and financial success in the coming year. He is often paired with Ebisu, another of the Seven Lucky Gods and the deity of fishermen and merchants, forming the popular combination known as "Daikoku-Ebisu." This pairing is a powerful symbol of wealth and good luck in Japanese culture.
