Dagvakt

Dagvakt is a Norwegian term that denotes the daytime shift or day duty within a work organization. The word combines dag meaning day and vakt meaning watch or duty. It is used especially in hospitals, municipal health and care services, emergency services, and other operations that staff in shifts around the clock. Dagvakt is contrasted with nattvakt (night duty), kveldsvakt (evening duty), and helgevakt (weekend duty).

The exact hours of a dagvakt vary by sector, institution, and collective agreements. In many Norwegian healthcare and care facilities, a dagvakt runs during regular daytime hours, such as roughly 07:00–15:30 or 08:00–16:00. Some settings use fixed daytime hours while others schedule day shifts as part of a rotating pattern. The duties during a dagvakt typically include planned clinical or care activities, patient rounds, documentation, coordination with other departments, and handovers to the next shift. In contrast, nattvakt focuses more on acute, continuous night care and stabilization.

Organization and implications: Day shifts are commonly arranged under collective agreements and staffing rosters. They often involve more routine and scheduled tasks, such as discharges, follow-up appointments, and administrative work, while night shifts concentrate on emergencies and ongoing monitoring.
