Dagkörljus

Dagkörljus, ofta översatt till daytime running lights (DRLs), are illuminated automatically during daytime while the vehicle is running. They are designed to increase the vehicle's conspicuity to other road users, reducing the likelihood of daylight collisions. DRLs are typically low-intensity lights located at the front of the vehicle and may use LED or halogen technology. They are separate from full headlights and generally do not illuminate the road ahead as far as headlights do; many systems switch to normal headlights when lighting conditions require more visibility or when the driver engages high beams.

DRLs operate automatically in most modern vehicles; some models allow drivers to disable them in the settings. They are usually powered by the vehicle's electrical system and consume minimal energy, especially when LEDs are used. In regions where DRLs are mandated, new vehicles are equipped with them by design.

The adoption of DRLs varies by country. They have been promoted in Europe, North America, and elsewhere as a safety feature, with evidence showing improved daytime conspicuity and a reduction in certain daytime crashes. However, DRLs are not a substitute for headlights in low visibility or at night, and drivers should switch to appropriate lighting under such conditions.

In Swedish, the term dagkörljus refers to these daytime running lights, and they are a standard feature on many new cars. The concept and technology continue to evolve with advances in LED and adaptive lighting, enabling DRLs to offer better energy efficiency and visibility without increasing glare for other road users.
