DPRs
DPRs is an English-language shorthand used to refer to states whose official names include the words “Democratic” and “People’s Republic” or “People’s Democratic Republic.” The most widely known example is the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea). The phrase also appears in the official names of other countries during various historical periods, particularly when socialist governments were in power. Examples include the People’s Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (1978–1992), the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (1967–1990), and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria (the country’s official name after independence). In practice, the use and recognition of the acronym DPR vary by context; some states are commonly identified by their full names rather than a fixed DPR acronym.
