DNSmerkinnät, often translated as DNS records, are entries in a Domain Name System (DNS) database. These records contain information about a domain name, such as its IP address, mail server, and other relevant data. When you type a website address into your browser, your computer queries a DNS server to find the corresponding IP address for that domain. DNS records are the foundation upon which this translation process occurs.

There are several common types of DNS records. The most fundamental is the A record, which maps a domain name to an IPv4 address. For IPv6 addresses, the AAAA record serves the same purpose. MX records are crucial for email delivery, specifying the mail servers responsible for accepting email on behalf of a domain. CNAME records, or canonical name records, create aliases, allowing one domain name to point to another. Other record types include NS (Name Server) records, which indicate the authoritative name servers for a domain, and TXT records, which can contain arbitrary text and are often used for verification purposes or security policies like SPF. DNS records are essential for the functioning of the internet, enabling users to access websites and send emails using human-readable domain names instead of complex IP addresses.
