DNAvirusten refers to viruses that have a genome composed of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). This DNA can be double-stranded or single-stranded, and it can exist as a linear or circular molecule. DNA viruses represent a significant group within the viral world, encompassing many well-known and impactful pathogens.

The replication cycle of DNA viruses is diverse and depends on the specific type of DNA genome they possess. Generally, after infecting a host cell, the viral DNA is transcribed into messenger RNA (mRNA), which is then translated into viral proteins. DNA replication itself can occur in the host cell's nucleus or cytoplasm, utilizing either the host's DNA polymerase enzymes or encoding their own viral polymerases. The method of replication is a key factor in classifying DNA viruses.

Examples of DNA viruses include the Adenoviridae family, which can cause respiratory illnesses, conjunctivitis, and gastroenteritis. The Herpesviridae family, known for causing a range of infections from chickenpox and shingles to mononucleosis and cold sores, also comprises DNA viruses. The Papillomaviridae family, responsible for human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, which can lead to warts and certain cancers, is another important group. Poxviridae, such as the virus that causes smallpox, are also DNA viruses.
