The DIKW model, also known as the DIKW hierarchy or wisdom hierarchy, is a framework used in information science and other fields to describe the relationships between data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. It posits a progression from raw data to actionable wisdom.

Data forms the base of the hierarchy. It consists of raw, unorganized facts, figures, or symbols without inherent meaning. For example, a list of numbers like 30, 25, 35, 40.

Information is derived from data by adding context, relevance, and purpose. It answers questions like "who," "what," "where," and "when." For instance, if the numbers represent temperatures in Celsius on consecutive days, the information becomes "The temperatures were 30, 25, 35, and 40 degrees Celsius over the last four days."

Knowledge is created when information is synthesized, understood, and applied. It answers the question "how." This involves recognizing patterns, making connections, and having the ability to act upon the information. Knowing that the temperatures are fluctuating significantly and understanding the implications for plant growth would be an example of knowledge.

Wisdom represents the highest level, involving understanding the "why" and making sound judgments based on knowledge, experience, and values. It's about applying knowledge with discernment and foresight, often for ethical or beneficial outcomes. Deciding to protect certain plants from extreme temperature changes, considering their long-term survival, would be an act of wisdom. The DIKW model suggests that to achieve wisdom, one must first acquire and process data, transform it into information, and then build knowledge from that information.
