Cyclotron-based refers to systems, processes, or applications that rely on a cyclotron as the primary source of accelerated charged particles. A cyclotron is a type of particle accelerator that uses a magnetic field and a rapidly alternating electric field to accelerate ions, typically protons, in a spiral path. As the ions gain energy, they move outward and can be directed toward targets for experiments or production of radioactive materials.

In medicine, cyclotron-based production is most widely associated with radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography (PET) and other diagnostic or therapeutic isotopes. Protons or deuterons produced by a cyclotron are directed at target materials to generate radioisotopes such as fluorine-18, carbon-11, nitrogen-13, or oxygen-15, which are incorporated into PET tracers. Cyclotrons are also used to produce other isotopes for research and sometimes for proton therapy, where therapeutic protons accelerated by the cyclotron are delivered to tumors. In some cases, cyclotrons enable on-site or near-site production, reducing dependence on distant reactors or suppliers.

Technology and operation of cyclotron-based systems emphasize shielding, radiation safety, and regulatory compliance, given the handling of radioactive materials and high-energy beams. Facility design must consider radiochemistry labs, hot cells, and specialized hot zones for isotope separation and purification. Limitations include the short half-lives of many produced isotopes and the need for rapid processing and distribution. Nonetheless, cyclotron-based methods offer flexible, relatively compact alternatives to reactor-based production for certain medical and research applications.
