Cyanobloom
Cyanobloom refers to a phenomenon where populations of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, increase rapidly in bodies of water. These blooms can occur in fresh, brackish, and marine environments. Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic microorganisms, and their proliferation is often triggered by an overabundance of nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, a process known as eutrophication. Factors contributing to eutrophication include agricultural runoff containing fertilizers, sewage discharge, and industrial wastewater.
When cyanobloom conditions are met, these microorganisms can multiply to form visible mats or discoloration on
The presence of cyanobloom can also negatively impact aquatic ecosystems by depleting dissolved oxygen levels when
