Cyanidebridged

Cyanide-bridged compounds are coordination complexes or extended networks in which cyanide ligands act as bridges between two or more metal centers. The cyanide ligand (CN−) binds metals through the terminal nitrogen and/or carbon atoms, enabling the formation of M–CN–M′ linkages that propagate through the structure. Bridging often occurs with carbon end to one metal and the nitrogen end to another, but multiple bridging modes are known.

Structural and electronic aspects: Cyanide is a strong-field ligand; when it bridges, it can mediate magnetic exchange and electron transfer between metal centers. The CN− ligand participates in sigma donation to both metals, and back-donation into the CN antibonding orbitals can modify C≡N bond length and vibrational frequencies. The resulting networks may be discrete clusters or extended lattices with varied oxidation states.

Occurrence and examples: The best-known cyanide-bridged material is Prussian blue, Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3, consisting of Fe–CN–Fe bridges that create a three-dimensional framework with mixed valence iron. Many related compounds, including Prussian blue analogs and other cyanide-bridged coordination polymers, feature chains or networks of alternating metals linked by CN ligands. These systems often show magnetic coupling and redox activity.

Applications and synthesis: Cyanide-bridged assemblies are studied for molecular magnets, electrochromic devices, and catalysis, as well as for models of electron transfer in biology. Synthesis typically involves combining metal salts with cyanide sources (such as ferrocyanide or potassium cyanide) under solvothermal or reflux conditions; precise stoichiometry and pH control govern network formation. Safety note: cyanide compounds are highly toxic and require proper handling.
