Curtainsider

Curtainsider, also known as a curtainside trailer or curtain sider, is a type of road freight trailer, typically a semi-trailer, that features a rigid floor and frame with a flexible curtain wall on the sides and often the roof. The curtain is usually made of vinyl or fabric reinforced with a lightweight frame. When closed, the curtain provides weather protection; the front and rear ends remain fixed for structural integrity.

Construction and operation: The curtain is attached to rails and buckles along the sides and can be drawn open or closed to allow side loading and unloading with a forklift or pallet jack. The system allows rapid conversion from a closed, weatherproof exterior to an open side with full access to the cargo area. Most curtainsiders have rear doors as backup access.

Advantages and limitations: Curtainsiders balance cargo protection with loading efficiency. They are typically lighter and more flexible than rigid box trailers and enable side loading without dock doors. Drawbacks include wear and tear on the curtain fabric, potential weather leakage if seals fail, and reduced security compared with solid walls. Maintenance and inspection of the curtains and tracks are important.

Curtainsiders are common for consumer goods, automotive parts, and other loads that fit palletized dimensions. They can be supplied in various lengths and are often configured to maximize width while preserving standard loading equipment.
