Cryotechnologie

Cryotechnologie, or cryotechnology, is the science and engineering of producing, maintaining, and using extremely low temperatures to study materials and enable processes beyond the reach of ordinary temperatures. It encompasses cryogenic engineering, cryopreservation, cryosurgery, and cryogenic techniques used in physics, chemistry, medicine, and industry.

Low temperatures are typically achieved with cryogenic fluids such as liquid nitrogen (-196°C) and liquid helium (-269°C), or with closed-cycle cryocoolers. Equipment includes dewars for storage, cryostats for sample cooling, and radiation shields inside vacuum vessels. Materials behave differently at low temperatures, often becoming brittle and contracting; careful design and materials selection are required to avoid mechanical failure and thermal stress. Safety concerns include oxygen depletion hazards from cryogenic gases and cold burns.

Applications include the production of superconducting magnets for MRI and particle accelerators, cryogenic propulsion and spacecraft cooling, and the cryopreservation of biological samples. In medicine, cryotechnology enables cryosurgery and organ/tissue storage. In industry, it enables material testing at low temperatures and the handling of cryogenic liquids for metalworking and chemical processes. In physics, ultralow temperatures allow the study of quantum phenomena and superconductivity.

The field has roots in early 20th-century work on liquefying gases, notably by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes and other scientists who advanced cryogenics. Today cryotechnologie remains essential for science and technology, balancing performance with safety and cost considerations while continuing to push the boundaries of temperature reduction.
