Crosslinkerit

Crosslinkerit is a term used in polymer theory to describe a hypothetical bifunctional crosslinking reagent intended to form covalent bonds between polymer chains and thereby create a three-dimensional network. In this conceptual framework, crosslinkerit molecules possess two reactive termini that can engage with compatible functional groups on neighboring polymers, enabling controlled network formation and tunable material properties.

Most commonly imagined as a difunctional molecule, crosslinkerit is described as having two reactive sites (designated here as sites A and B) that can be activated by heat, light, or chemical initiators. The choice of reactive chemistry dictates the type of linkage formed (for example ester, amide, thioether, or urethane–like connections) and influences curing conditions, network density, and mechanical performance. Variants may differ in spacer length between the reactive termini, which affects crosslink distance and elasticity.

Applications envisioned for crosslinkerit-like reagents include hydrogels for biomedicine, coatings and adhesives with enhanced solvent resistance, and elastomeric materials with tailored stiffness and damping. Synthesis in the conceptual model generally involves preparing a difunctional molecule with two reactive handles that can be selectively activated and coupled to polymer chains under chosen conditions. While crosslinkerit is not a standard or widely recognized chemical name in peer-reviewed literature, the idea serves as a useful abstraction for exploring how bifunctional crosslinking agents influence network formation and material properties.
