Crossbearings

Crossbearings are a type of rolling-element bearing that utilizes four sets of rollers or balls arranged in a cross pattern. This unique configuration allows for simultaneous support of radial and axial loads in any direction. The rollers are typically housed within a cylindrical outer race and separated by a cage. The cross arrangement, with rollers positioned at 90-degree angles to each other, creates a highly rigid and compact bearing solution.

The primary advantage of crossbearings lies in their ability to handle combined loads with high precision and stiffness. They are particularly useful in applications where space is limited and the need for accurate positioning is critical. Examples include robotics, machine tools, optical instruments, and aerospace equipment. The internal geometry of a crossbearing distributes the load across multiple contact points, reducing stress and increasing the bearing's load-carrying capacity compared to traditional bearings of similar size.

There are two main types of crossbearings: roller crossbearings and ball crossbearings. Roller crossbearings, using cylindrical or tapered rollers, generally offer higher load capacity and stiffness. Ball crossbearings, using spherical balls, can provide smoother operation and lower friction. The selection between these types depends on the specific requirements of the application, such as load magnitude, speed, and desired precision. Maintenance typically involves lubrication, and their sealed designs can offer protection against contaminants.
