Criollos

Criollos is a term used in Spanish-speaking regions to refer to several related concepts that share a common root in local origin and heritage. It is used to describe people, cultures, and, in scientific and agricultural contexts, certain locally developed breeds and varieties. The word often carries both historical and contemporary connotations, varying by country and context.

Historically, criollo referred to people of European descent who were born in the Americas, as opposed to peninsulares who were born in Europe. Criollos formed a distinct social group within colonial hierarchies and, while sometimes wealthy and influential, were frequently restricted from the highest offices by colonial authorities. In the 19th century, many criollo elites played prominent roles in independence movements across Latin America, shaping national identities in countries such as Mexico, the Caribbean, and the southern cone.
