Crestlines

Crestlines are the lines that follow the crests or ridges of hills and mountains, tracing the highest continuous backbone of a landscape. They represent the topographic spine of terrain and are used in geomorphology, cartography, and landscape planning to describe the shape and structure of mountain ranges, hills, and plateaus. Crestlines can also serve as boundaries or reference lines for various geographic and planning purposes.

In practice, crestlines are not fixed features. They can shift with seasonal snow cover, vegetation, and ongoing erosion, and may appear as discontinuous segments in areas of complex terrain or limited data. Modern methods extract crestlines from digital elevation models by applying ridge-detection techniques that follow local elevation maxima and curvature to produce a continuous line that approximates the terrain crest. In hydrology, crestlines often relate to drainage divides, helping to delineate watershed boundaries since water tends to flow away from the crest on either side.

Applications of crestlines include terrain analysis, environmental and land-use planning, route planning for hiking and mountaineering, and the study of habitat connectivity along ridgelines. They also aid in hazard assessment and erosion monitoring by providing a clear reference for where the highest terrain concentrates.
