Crambids

Crambids are a family of moths, scientifically known as Crambidae. This family is part of the superfamily Pyraloidea, which also includes the snout moths (Pyralidae). Crambids are a very diverse group, with over 10,000 described species found worldwide. They are commonly referred to as grass moths or snout moths due to their often long, pointed labial palpi, which give them a snout-like appearance.

The adult crambids exhibit a wide range of sizes and wing patterns. Many species are small to medium-sized, with forewings that are often elongated and triangular. The coloration can vary from drab browns and grays to bright, metallic sheens and intricate markings, which can provide camouflage or serve as signals for mating. Their flight patterns are also diverse, with some being weak fliers and others strong and fast.

The larvae of crambids are varied in their habits. Many are herbivorous, feeding on a wide array of plants, particularly grasses and sedges, which is where the "grass moth" common name originates. Some species bore into stems, roots, or seed heads, while others live exposed on foliage. A few species are known pests of agricultural crops, such as the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis), which, despite its name, is now considered a crambid. The life cycle typically involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages.
