The term literally combines coulisse (the backstage area or sliding scenery) with schakel (link or coupling), reflecting its association with moving components that slide within a guided path.

In theatre applications, coulisschakels refer to linkage assemblies that drive sliding scenery, such as flats, drops, or panels, along a track hidden in the wings or above the stage. The arrangement is designed to translate rotational or rack-driven motion into controlled linear movement while maintaining alignment with the stage plane. Typical constructions involve simple four-bar or slider-crank configurations that connect a hand crank, winch, or counterweight system to the sliding element, often with a guiding channel to prevent lateral movement.

Some sources treat coulisschakels as a broader family of sliding-link mechanisms used for backstage scenery, while others reserve the term for a particular linkage configuration within a broader rigging system.
