Costeficitate

Costeficitate, or cost-eficacitate, is a concept used in economics, public policy, and health economics to describe the extent to which the resources used by a program, policy, or intervention are justified by the outcomes achieved. It focuses on the efficiency of turning inputs into desired results, rather than on whether the results occur at all. A more cost-effective intervention delivers a given or greater level of impact at lower or more favorable costs.

Measurement of costeficitate is commonly done through cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA). In CEA, the costs and outcomes of competing options are compared, with outcomes measured in natural units such as cases prevented, life-years gained, or other domain-specific indicators. The result is typically expressed as a cost per unit of outcome (for example, cost per life-year gained). This allows decision-makers to identify interventions that achieve the best value for money within a given context.

Applications of costeficitate span many sectors, including healthcare, education, energy, and environmental policy. It aids prioritization and resource allocation by highlighting options that maximize impact relative to their costs, assuming similar effectiveness.

Limitations of costeficitate include its focus on efficiency to the exclusion of other values such as equity, feasibility, or public acceptance. Outcomes must be comparable and measured consistently, and results can depend on the chosen unit of outcome and context. It is related to, but distinct from, cost-benefit analysis, which monetizes outcomes, and cost-utility analysis, which uses quality-adjusted life years or similar measures to compare disparate health benefits.
