Cornucopioides

Cornucopioides is a genus of extinct ray-finned fish that lived during the Late Cretaceous period. Fossilized remains of these fish have been found in what is now Europe. The genus was first described in 2003 by paleontologist Enrique Peiró.

The name Cornucopioides derives from the Latin "cornucopia," referring to the horn of plenty, and the Greek word "eides," meaning "resembling." This name reflects the distinctive, horn-like shape of the fish's snout, which is a prominent feature in its fossilized remains. The type species, Cornucopioides paradoxus, is known from several well-preserved specimens.

Cornucopioides is characterized by its elongated body, large eyes, and a uniquely shaped premaxilla that extends forward, giving it the characteristic cornucopia-like appearance. Its dentition suggests it was likely a predator, feeding on smaller fish or invertebrates. The presence of specialized fin rays indicates it may have had adaptations for maneuvering in complex environments, such as shallow marine or estuarine habitats.
