Coriosolites

The Coriosolites were a Celtic people who inhabited the Armorican peninsula, in what is now Brittany, France. They were one of the twelve tribes of Gaul that Caesar encountered during his Gallic Wars. Their territory was located in the northeastern part of the peninsula, centered around the oppidum of Corseul.

Little is known about their origins or early history, but they are believed to have been of Gallic stock, with potential connections to other Brythonic peoples. Their name may derive from the Celtic words "corios" meaning "group" or "army" and "sol" meaning "sun," possibly indicating a warrior society or a people with a sun cult.

The Coriosolites were known for their military prowess and were involved in various conflicts throughout the Gallic Wars. They initially allied with the Veneti against Caesar, but after the Veneti's defeat, they submitted to Roman rule. However, they later participated in the general revolt of the Gallic tribes in 52 BC, led by Vercingetorix.

Following the Roman conquest, the Coriosolites were integrated into the Roman province of Gallia Lugdunensis. Their main settlement, Coriosolite (modern Corseul), became an important administrative and religious center, featuring a large forum, baths, and a temple. The Coriosolites are primarily known through archaeological findings and mentions in Roman historical texts, particularly by Julius Caesar.
