CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive medical procedure for body contouring that uses controlled cooling to reduce fat in targeted areas. It relies on cryolipolysis, a process in which fat cells are crystallized and undergo apoptosis while surrounding tissue remains largely unaffected. The treatment is marketed under the CoolSculpting brand and originated with ZELTIQ Aesthetics and later came under Allergan.

During a session, a clinician applies a cooling device to the chosen area. The applicator uses vacuum to draw the fat bulge between cooling panels and delivers precise temperatures for a period typically 35 to 60 minutes. Most patients experience a temporary sensation of pulling, tugging, or numbness in the treated region.

Fat reduction results are gradual as dead fat cells are processed and eliminated by the body's natural mechanisms. Clinical experience reports reductions of about 20 to 25 percent in the treated fat layer per area after one session, with additional sessions possible for further contouring. Treatments are not intended for weight loss.

Common side effects include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, tingling or numbness, and slight discomfort. Rare complications such as paradoxical adipose hyperplasia have been reported. The procedure is generally not recommended for individuals with cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or cold urticaria and is typically avoided during pregnancy. FDA clearance exists for non-invasive fat reduction in selected areas.
