Continuummekaniikkaan

Continuummekaniikkaan is the Finnish term for continuum mechanics. It is a branch of mechanics that treats matter as a continuous medium, rather than as a discrete collection of particles. This simplification allows for the application of differential calculus to describe the behavior of materials, such as solids and fluids, under various conditions.

In continuum mechanics, physical quantities like density, velocity, and stress are assumed to vary smoothly throughout the medium. This approach is valid when the characteristic length scales of the problem are much larger than the microscopic dimensions of the material's constituent particles. The fundamental principles of continuum mechanics are based on conservation laws: conservation of mass, conservation of linear momentum, and conservation of energy.

The field is broadly divided into two main areas: solid mechanics and fluid mechanics. Solid mechanics deals with the deformation and flow of solid materials, including topics like elasticity, plasticity, and fracture. Fluid mechanics, on the other hand, studies the behavior of fluids (liquids and gases) in motion and at rest, encompassing areas such as hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, and magnetohydrodynamics. Continuum mechanics provides the theoretical framework for analyzing a wide range of phenomena, from the structural integrity of bridges to the flight of airplanes and the flow of blood in arteries.
