Contextualització

Contextualització (Catalan for contextualization) is the process of placing something within its relevant context to illuminate meaning, relevance, or applicability. It involves considering linguistic, cultural, historical, social, and situational factors that shape how information is interpreted. Contextualization helps interpret statements, texts, or data and distinguishes itself from decontextualització, which presents information without essential background that could alter interpretation.

The term derives from the Catalan verb contextualitzar, meaning to place in context, plus the noun-forming suffix -ització.

Applications of contextualització are widespread. In education, it means linking concepts to students’ lived experiences, local issues, or disciplinary practices to improve understanding and motivation. In linguistics and translation, context is essential for interpreting meaning, implicature, and register; translations may require cultural adaptation to audience and setting. In research and the social sciences, contextualització situates observations within historical, institutional, or cultural frames to avoid misinterpretation and to explain relevance. In information design and media, contextualization adds metadata, situational cues, or user context to content, aiding discovery and comprehension.

Considerations for effective contextualització include awareness of bias, cultural sensitivity, and avoiding overgeneralization. It should be explicit about the limits of context and supported by methods such as case studies, ethnography, metadata schemas, or user-centered design to ensure accurate and responsible interpretation.
