The primary aim is to achieve proper weight distribution, maintain vessel trim within limits, maximize space utilization, and ensure secure and efficient cargo handling from origin to destination.

In practice, stowage planning considers several factors. Weigh and orient each container by its weight, size, type, destination, and handling instructions. Special attention is given to heavy and light containers, keep-out zones, and the segregation of hazardous materials or incompatible goods. Reefer containers require power and ventilation planning, while dry containers focus on stacking restrictions and access for inspection or unloading. The plan also accounts for port equipment, crane reach, yard equipment, and ship stability during sailing.

Methods and tools often involve computer-based stowage plans that balance constraints using optimization techniques. Planners generate a stowage plan for the vessel and a corresponding yard plan for the terminal, detailing container identifiers, sizes, weights, destinations, and securing instructions. Rules and regulations from maritime authorities influence practice, including loading limits, lashing and securing requirements, and chassis or twist-lock usage. The resulting plans aim to reduce handling time, prevent damage, and ensure safe, compliant transport from start to finish.
