Conditionsgeothermal refers to the combination of geological, thermal, technical, environmental, and regulatory factors that determine where geothermal energy can be found, how it can be developed, and how sustainably it can be used. The central requirement is access to Earth’s heat at a usable temperature within practical depths, along with rock and fluid conditions that allow efficient heat extraction.

Geological and resource conditions vary by resource type. In conventional hydrothermal systems, viable reservoirs require permeable rocks with natural fluids that transport heat, and a sufficient temperature at accessible depths. Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) aim to expand potential by artificially improving rock permeability through stimulation, enabling heat extraction even in less permeable formations. Other geothermal concepts, such as geopressured reservoirs or hot dry rock, rely on specific combinations of heat, pressure, and rock properties. Across these types, reservoir size, fluid availability, heat reserve, and the ability to reinject fluids influence feasibility.

Key physical indicators include temperature gradients, heat flow, rock porosity and permeability, and reservoir pressure. Exploration uses geophysical surveys, geochemical sampling, and drilling to assess temperatures, fluid contents, and rock mechanics. Economic and operational factors—well depth and drilling costs, the rate of heat recovery, and long-term reservoir sustainability—also shape viability.

Environmental and regulatory considerations encompass surface land use, water resources, seismic risk from stimulation activities, emissions, and permitting. Responsible development emphasizes reservoir management, monitoring, and strategies to minimize environmental impact while ensuring long-term energy supply.
