Compris

Compris is a French term that functions primarily as the past participle of the verb comprendre (to understand). It derives from Latin comprehendere and is used in various grammatical contexts in modern French.

As a verb participle, compris appears in compound tenses with the auxiliary avoir. For example, j'ai compris means “I understood.” In this verbal role, the participle generally does not agree with the subject in gender or number.

As an adjective, compris can agree with the noun it modifies. The masculine singular form is compris; the feminine singular form is comprise. The masculine plural form remains compris, while the feminine plural form is comprises. This adjectival use means phrases like un élément compris (an included element) or des éléments compris dans le contrat (the elements included in the contract) demonstrate agreement with gender and number.

In fixed expressions, y compris means “including” and is invariable: Tout le monde, y compris les enseignants, est présent.

Common phrases related to the concept include tout compris (all-inclusive), le prix tout compris (the all-inclusive price), and ce qui est compris dans le contrat (what is included in the contract). Compris is often used in administrative, commercial, and educational French to denote items or services included within a package or agreement, or to indicate understanding of information.
