When this phrase appears, it commonly refers to magnetite (iron(II,III) oxide, Fe3O4) being used as a component in a material, composite, or formulation. Magnetite is a naturally occurring ferrimagnetic mineral that also exists in synthetic forms for industrial and research use.

Magnetite has an inverse spinel structure with Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions distributed between tetrahedral and octahedral sites. It exhibits ferrimagnetism and a high saturation magnetization, making it responsive to magnetic fields. The material is electrically conductive for an oxide and shows a Curie temperature of about 858 K. Its physical properties depend on particle size, stoichiometry, and surface chemistry, which influence magnetization, stability, and reactivity.

Geologically, magnetite is widespread in igneous and metamorphic rocks and is a major source of magnetic lodestone. It also forms in sediments and hydrothermal deposits. In commerce and research, magnetite is used as a black pigment in coatings and ceramics, a magnetic filler in polymers, and as a catalyst or support material in chemical processes. Magnetic nanoparticles of Fe3O4 are extensively studied for biomedical imaging (as MRI contrast agents), drug delivery, and hyperthermia treatments, as well as for environmental remediation and energy storage applications.

Synthesis methods for magnetite nanoparticles include co-precipitation, thermal decomposition, and hydrothermal routes. In environmental and industrial contexts, magnetite as a component can enhance magnetic separability, catalytic activity, or adsorption capacity. Safety considerations focus on nanoparticle usability and potential inhalation or ecological risks, addressed through surface coatings and controlled handling.
