ComplementOf refers to the operation of taking the complement of a set, class, or concept with respect to a universal domain. In set theory, if U is a universal set and A is a subset of U, the complement of A (often denoted A^c or U \ A) consists of all elements in U that are not in A. This relationship satisfies A ∪ A^c = U and A ∩ A^c = ∅. For example, with U = {1,2,3,4,5} and A = {1,2}, the complement of A is {3,4,5}.

In broader logical and algebraic contexts, the complement operator underpins the idea of negation relative to a fixed universe. In Boolean algebra and related logics, every element may have a complement, and De Morgan’s laws describe how complements distribute over unions and intersections. The concept is central to defining disjointness, partitions, and negation in many mathematical formalisms.

In description logics and the Web Ontology Language (OWL), complementOf is used to form class expressions that denote the set of all individuals not in a given class. This is expressed as a complement or negation of a class with respect to the domain of discourse. Although open-world semantics govern reasoning in these systems, the complementOf construction enables precise modeling of exclusions and facilitates inferences about class membership and disjointness.
