It does not denote a single organization, but a way of referring to how convents and monasteries form interconnected groups through shared vows, governance, and collaborative ministries.

Nun communities exist in many Christian traditions, most prominently in Catholic and Orthodox churches, and in some Buddhist lineages. Within these traditions, communities are usually organized as convents or monasteries and led by an abbess, prioress, or mother superior. They may live a cloistered life with limited external contact or pursue apostolic missions such as education, healthcare, or social service.

Networks of nun communities can be formal or informal. Federations and congregations—such as the Benedictine Confederation or other orders—coordinate calendars, training, and shared resources. Informal associations enable mutual support, joint retreats, publishing efforts, and cross-convent collaborations on charitable initiatives. Modern communications and travel have expanded these networks, enabling greater cooperation across regions.

Impact and roles: Nun communities have historically contributed to education, healthcare, and cultural preservation, while maintaining contemplative or ascetic aspects of religious life. They support spiritual care, run charitable programs, and preserve liturgical and artistic traditions.

Challenges and future: Representative concerns include aging memberships, declining and fluctuating vocations, financial sustainability, and regulatory pressures. Some communities address these challenges by opening to broader forms of service, strengthening ecumenical and interfaith dialogue, and leveraging technology to sustain their missions.
