Commercialized is an adjective describing activities, objects, or cultures that have been oriented toward commercial purposes or profits, often through market incentives, advertising, sponsorship, or licensing. It can refer to a process by which non-market or non-profit realms are adapted to fit market logics.

As a process, commercialization involves increasing emphasis on market-driven decision making, revenue generation, and consumer appeal. It affects a wide range of sectors, including entertainment, sports, education, science, healthcare, and public services, where market considerations influence priorities, access, and presentation.

Historically linked to industrial capitalism, mass media, and consumer culture, commercialization expanded with advertising, branding, and the monetization of previously non-commercial activities. Critics worry that it can prioritize profitability over public interest, artistic integrity, or social welfare, while proponents argue it funds production, innovation, and wider distribution.

Common examples include product placements in film and television, sponsorship and broadcasting rights in sports, tuition and corporate partnerships in education, marketing in healthcare, and privatization or outsourcing of public services. In science, industry funding and patenting can shape research agendas.

Impacts are mixed. Benefits may include efficiency, wider reach, and new services; downsides can include commodification of culture, reduced accessibility for some groups, ethical concerns about influence and manipulation, and erosion of public goods.

Assessment often uses indicators such as advertising share, sponsorship presence, licensing revenue, corporate ownership, and level of market integration to gauge the degree of commercialization.
