Colorneutral, sometimes written color-neutral or colorneutral, is an adjective used across disciplines to denote absence of a strong chromatic hue or a stance free of color bias. In practice, it can refer to achromatic colors, neutral palettes, or policies and attitudes that avoid color-based judgments.

In color science and optics, a neutral color is typically achromatic, meaning it has no hue and appears black, white, or gray. Neutral colors reflect or emit light without a spectral bias toward red, green, or blue. Achieving true neutrality involves specific pigment mixtures or light sources; in lighting and photography, white balance and gray references are used to calibrate color neutrality.

In digital imaging and design, neutral tones correspond to equal or nearly equal values across red, green, and blue channels, producing grays ranging from black to white. Neutral gray cards are used for color calibration, ensuring consistent rendering across devices. Designers often select neutral palettes—blacks, whites, grays, beiges—to provide versatility and to allow other colors to stand out without clashing.

In branding, fashion, and interior design, color-neutral palettes favor understated hues such as charcoal, ivory, taupe, and stone. These choices aim for timelessness, ease of coordination, and broad accessibility, though they may be perceived as conservative or less expressive in some contexts.

In sociopolitical discourse, color-neutral policies or language seek to minimize emphasis on race, ethnicity, or color as a basis for decisions. This usage can promote inclusivity or be debated for potentially overlooking cultural specificity, depending on context.
